Abu Dhabi has activated a new AI-powered parking system that automatically deducts fees from motorists’ Salik balances in more than 15 busy areas across the emirate, in a move authorities say will ease congestion and support future smart mobility plans.
The Parkonic-Mawaqif system was launched in partnership with Aldar Properties and Q Mobility across main highways, major malls, hospitals, marinas, and beach fronts and is part of a broader program by the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) and Q Mobility to modernize public parking, according to Gulf News.

Authorities say the new system is designed to improve the parking experience for residents and visitors, cut violations, and support Abu Dhabi’s sustainability agenda and the UAE’s future mobility strategy by preparing infrastructure for smart and autonomous vehicles.
Inside Abu Dhabi’s New AI-powered Parking System
The Parkonic-Mawaqif platform uses artificial intelligence and automatic number plate recognition cameras to manage entry and exit without tickets or barriers. Cameras read the vehicle plate on arrival and again on departure, and the system calculates the stay and charges the correct parking fee.
Payments are processed automatically through digital channels, including the TAMM and DARB applications and Salik, removing the need for cash, paper tickets, or conventional parking messages.
Officials say the system is expected to shorten queues at entry and exit points, reduce circling for spaces, and improve traffic flow around major malls and community hubs. By cutting down on paper tickets and unnecessary trips, it is also intended to support environmental targets and more efficient land use in high-demand areas.
Abu Dhabi Extends AI Push Inside Correctional System
Abu Dhabi’s push to embed artificial intelligence across everyday services is not limited to transport and parking. As the emirate rolls out the Parkonic Mawaqif system on main roads and at busy destinations, the judicial sector is adopting similar tools inside correctional facilities.
On Jan. 5, the Correctional and Rehabilitation Policies Committee at the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department endorsed a new package of technology projects that use artificial intelligence to upgrade the way rehabilitation centers are run, as WAM reported.
The plan includes smart security platforms to oversee daily operations, systems that can detect unusual behavior and trigger rapid responses, and an Inmate Requests Management System that connects directly to the courts.
The initiative sits within the department’s wider digital transformation agenda, which aims to automate core procedures, raise safety levels inside facilities, and deliver faster, more reliable services for inmates and staff.
