The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has taken a major step in its Web3 journey by launching its own Layer-1 blockchain in collaboration with Avalanche. The new network, named the FIFA Blockchain, signals the football governing body’s bold move towards a more immersive and scalable digital ecosystem designed to engage billions of fans worldwide.

Migration of FIFA Collect to Enhance Digital Experience

The FIFA Blockchain will be the foundation for a new suite of digital products, starting with the migration of FIFA Collect, which is the organization’s official digital collectibles platform. Previously hosted on the Algorand blockchain, FIFA Collect will now operate on Avalanche’s advanced subnet technology, enabling faster transactions, increased scalability, and full compatibility with Ethereum-based tools, including MetaMask.

The shift marks a significant upgrade in FIFA’s digital capabilities, especially in anticipation of surging user activity during global events such as the FIFA World Cup. By opting for a custom Layer-1 network, FIFA gains full control over its digital products, ensuring seamless user experiences and robust performance during peak demand.

Partnership with Modex and Industry Impact

Web3 technology firm Modex, a longtime FIFA partner, is spearheading the development of the blockchain. Modex CEO Francesco Abbate said the decision followed an in-depth assessment of scalability, performance, and integration ease. “The new infrastructure is purpose-built to support FIFA’s growing suite of digital fan engagement products,” Abbate noted.

The launch also serves as a significant validation of Avalanche’s enterprise-grade capabilities. The Avalanche9000 upgrade, which enhances performance and interoperability, positions the platform as a leading choice for real-world, large-scale blockchain use cases beyond crypto-native communities.

Seems like a Bright Future

Market reactions to the announcement were swift. Avalanche’s native token AVAX surged 10.49%, reaching $24.92, at the time of writing.

FIFA has explored blockchain in the past when it released a non-fungible token (NFT) collection on the Algorand blockchain in 2022 ahead of the Qatar FIFA World Cup. But now it is moving beyond NFTs, laying a comprehensive digital foundation to redefine how football culture connects with fans in the Web3 era.

With Avalanche providing the technological backbone and Modex steering development, FIFA’s blockchain transformation is set to reshape digital fandom and unlock next-generation experiences for over five billion global football enthusiasts, as stated in FIFA’s official post:
